Preparing to leave the nest
Posted on January 21st, 2011 in Autism & HealthBusy, busy, busy. That’s what I’ve been and still am. Not that I’m complaining, as busy means more work and being self-employed this means more income. Most of which will go directly into my savings accounts. And yes, thats plural. Not exactly spreading the whealth but trying to make the most of it (interest-wise) for the future.
I’ve always intended to buy a place when leaving home, as you will build up capital over the years, as opposed to renting where money just dissappears into someone elses pocket. With the economy being what it is and a housing market that has lost all sense of reality in the Netherlands it will probably be a few years before I leave the nest…
In this time I’m trying to save up as much as I reasonably can, with most larger purchases being made with the future in mind. Only buying things that last or will have a use in my future home. And acting on sales to buy items on a discount to save money in the long run, for example. Hobbies have expenses too, with these things I have always made it a point to wait a few days or possibly weeks before making a purchase, this prevents impulse buying and minimizes the chance of future regret.
For now I’m still very much at home with my parents, but it will be good to really take care of myself. Having to follow other people’s schedule and organisation are the only things that can frustate me slightly on a daily basis, so being able to follow my own schedule and organizing in my own way will be important improvements for me. There will of course be difficulties. The stress of adapting to a new house and turning it into a home are not to be underestimated for anyone, autistic or otherwise. Despite the stress moving out will bring, I’m still very much looking forward to the experience.
